The Dutch National Military Museum
A visit to the Dutch national military museum is a real treat for both young and old.
Based 7 km outside of Amersfoort on a former Dutch Air force based. The museum houses a truly unique and impressive collection of weapons, vehicles and aircraft covering the long history of warfare of the world and the Netherlands in particular.
I went along with my 11 year old son, he has a great deal of interest in history and warfare of the past.
We started by walking through a room that displayed the development of such things as armour, communication, medicine and speed. Most of these displays had some sort of interactive element which explains the subject in an informative and interesting matter.
One example was the relative distant of the range of a crossbow to a machine gun.
And for a little humor they added the range of a Star wars blaster.
After these rooms the was a display devoted to the role of armoured warfare. Starting all the way back to Assyrian siege engine made of wood and mud,all the way to the latest high tech tanks.
But the real icing on the cake, was the main display area where real fighter and bomber aircraft were on show, even suspended from the roof in a mock dog fight.
Also in this area there was a vast an array of artillery pieces and armoured vehicle of almost every kind, dating from the First world war to the present day.
My son and I were at the museum for about 2 hours the enjoyed it immensely.
And plan to visit again, since there was so much more that we had yet to see.
All in all it was a very informative and exciting visit and we'll worth it.
In August the museum will host an exhibition to mark the 100th year anniversary of the tank.
I strongly recommend that you check it out.
