'”Ethically fashionable or fashionably ethical”
On a visit to the small ethically founded Denim label Kuyichi, I found out that both statements are true. Based on an industrial estate on the outskirts of Haarlem in the Netherlands, Kuyichi work their magic. I met with Rosemarie Hup, head of marketing and “general know it all “( in the nicest possible way). I started by asking her about the company’s rather Japanese sounding name, KUYICHI. The the name in fact is not Japanese but is an ancient figure from the mythology of Peru. I also learn that Kuyichi was founded and 33% owned by Dutch development organisation Solidaridad. They only use sustainably produced organic cotton and practices fair trade with its suppliers.
All of which give their customers a warm fuzzy feeling inside, when purchasing a product from them. But in today’s financial climate, being ethical is not enough to stay profitable. Elements such as a keen eye for directional trends and attention to style and fit play a huge part in making Kuyichi the success that it is.
