Mario Testino: Undressed
Mario Testino: Undressed, curated personally by the photographer, explores the concept of undressing (naturally) through photography and film. The exhibition consists of fifty-four floor-to-ceiling-sized prints throughout three halls of the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin. The large photos are meant to impose a human landscape, filling the exhibition halls with bodies and emotions.
The objective of the entire exhibition, however, is to blur boundaries between human anatomy and art. In addition to the larger-than-life photos, a film titled Undressing The Mind will debut in the foundation's cinema room. The film chronicles Testino's conversations with psychoanalyst Kai Hammermeister. Undressing The Mind deeply analyzes the root of Testino’s fixation on the human body while discussing his dynamic perspective on nudity. Viewers get a rare opportunity to hear one of fashion's most prolific photographers to open up about intimacy and love, two rather integral themes in his work.
Crafted exclusively for the Helmut Newton Foundation, Testino's alluring exhibition opens today and will be open to the public until November 19. The entire exhibit pays homage to German-Australian photographer Helmut Newton, who Testino credits as "a big inspiration," adding that Newton "did it all in his own way and out of his own fantasies, so it is an honor to be exhibiting at his Foundation.”
In the past, Testino has exhibited work at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, The Shanghai Art Museum, Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, and The National Portrait Gallery in London. That being said, Testino is no stranger to the art world and his intriguing, edgy collection of photos that make up the Undressed exhibition are bound to be equally as iconic, if not more, than his previous displays.
