Masaaki Homma
Launched in 1997 by Masaaki Homma, Mastermind's eclectic mix of sport, street and elegance is distinguished by cutting-edge luxury fabrics developed solely in Japan – specifically making use of the nation’s craftsmanship. The latest SS’16 collection features A-Girls, Japan’s home-grown manufacturer dedicated to bringing out the best in materials to convey their full value.
Based in a long-established factory in Wakayama for more than 75 years, A-Girls provides materials for the ultimate comfort, underpinned by a careful and precise selection of only the finest fabrics. Since its inception, their ultimate luxury collection has gained trust from some of the world’s leading fashion houses – and now falls into place with Homma’s latest mastermind collection.
“Made in Japan is something I strived for from the beginning” – Masaaki Homma.
Taking exclusivity – and admittedly price – to new highs, the Japanese master of quality makes his END. debut with a collection that takes a limited edition approach to a selection of tees and hoodies. Individually the products are not only made in Japan, but have the names of the people that helped create the piece. Each person supporting the construction is named, giving them a great sense of responsibility and in some cases opening doors to work with esteemed haute couture maisons.
“Some people find our particular skull looks quite peaceful. Not evil, but rather peaceful or even smiling.”
Showing that their dedication to quality extends to a collection of impeccably crafted jewellery, pieces to watch out for are the skull sculptured ring and the onyx crafted bracelets and necklaces. The skull and bones motif is a prominent aspect of most of the mastermind Japan products, a favourite of the designer as it symbolises a “fight until death to fulfil one’s destiny”. An ultimate icon, the skull and cross bones is featured throughout, unexpectedly joined by the peace and smiley motif.
With a following from some of the world’s greatest artists, Karl Lagerfeld and Comme des Garçons’ Rei Kawakubo to name a few – count us in.
